As users of netbooks and MIDs take advantage of cloud computing applications and online storage of personal files, they are burdened by a growing number of different passwords to access their web accounts. To alleviate the pain of trying to remember these passwords, Fingerprint Suite Starter remembers and replays these numerous passwords with the simple swipe of a finger. The dedicated touch-based user interface offered by the UPEK TouchStrip Fingerprint sensor also provides a convenient user experience on these small platforms with limited or no keyboards.

New Biometric Products from Secugen

SecuGen, a leading developer of biometric products, has announced the release of two new high-capacity OEM fingerprint sensors. The two new scanners are called SDA04M and SDA04.


SDA04M, a non-FIPS compliant commercial application scanner, is intended for commercial biometric applications. While the SDA04, a FIPS compliant scanner for government or commercial applications, is intended for government and commercial applications where FIPS 201/PIV compliance is required.


The new SDA04 and SDA04M fingerprint sensors can register and store 10,000 users and perform blazingly fast one-to-many (1:N) searches on all 10,000. These sensors support either SecuGen proprietary templates or ANSI-INCITS 378-2004 standard templates for interoperability. The ANSI-INCITS option utilizes SecuGen’s MINEX compliant algorithms that have been tested by NIST. Additionally, the SDA04’s fingerprint optic module is FBI certified for PIV compliance and meets FBI Image Quality Specs.

Fingerprint scanning security is no longer the technology of sci-fi thrillers or the super wealthy. In fact, portable, print-based digital privacy can be had by the masses for $50, thanks to a new product from Upek.


The company behind many of the fingerprint security systems built into top-name laptops and personal computers has a new product on the market that is perfect for everyday computer users.


The Eikon To Go Digital Privacy Manager ($49.99) works with both Windows and Mac operating systems. It helps Windows users lock their computer, remember passwords, encrypt files with sensitive data, and launch applications all with the swipe of a finger. Mac users benefit from the ability to lock their computers, quickly switch between user accounts, unlock Keychain and authenticate to secure preferences.


Those who are leery about having a fingerprint on file in their computer need not worry. The device does not read and match the entire fingerprint, rather, it creates a mathematical representation of key information about the fingerprint.


Once a fingerprint – or at least unique details of it – is registered, Upek’s software will guide users through setting up passwords for websites, banks, and archives. Gone will be the days of sticky notes around the desktop with usernames and passwords scribbled. Also gone will be those simple, security-challenged passwords like first names, logins spelled backwards, phone numbers and other tricks to help password-clogged brains.

A biometric passport is a combination of a paper and electronic identity document that used to authenticate the citizenship of travelers. The biometric passport is planned to have digital imaging and fingerprint biometrics placed on the radio frequency identification chip. Passports and ID cards are unlikely to actually use most the thirteen biometric indicators the government proposes to collect on all citizens.
